Natural Bodybuilding Trends

I’ve been transforming bodies with food and exercise science in Riverside for over 26 years. In 2022 and 2023, I was featured on the cover of Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine and placed 1st in my class in multiple NPC Competitions. As well as ran a 3600-square-foot facility in Riverside for over 20 years and recently closed that facility to launch an upgraded system that better fits current fitness and nutrition trends.

When asking people what they want for a goal, most people want to enjoy a healthy, fit body daily (as opposed to 3-4 times a year for an event) and want easy solutions that fit into a hectic schedule without taking stimulants or steroids. I believe 80 percent or more of people should be in an appearance program as opposed to a performance program. The risk of injury is far lower, and it’s easier to master your body doing an appearance program that only uses food and exercise science and removes stimulants and steroids from the formula.

It can be confusing for many people on how to get what they want from a program. A large number of people need to choose between looking the way they want or being able to perform in a sport or with weights the way they want. There is a high number of people not recovering from training, having low/wrong nutrition, or experiencing a lack of sleep, which is leading to injury or maintaining more fat on their bodies. Low-calorie and low-carb plans are not a good idea for most exercisers. Steroids and stimulants are creating a false impression of what is possible for those who only want to use food and exercise science to reach their goals.

Appearance Program vs. Performance Programs
Results & Injury: A performance program is designed to excel in a sport of your choice “to perform” — whether it be a runner, swimmer, CrossFit enthusiast, or a participant in the new performance sections in gyms, a football player, and competitive sports. Conversely, an appearance program focuses on achieving a “specific look”, such as modeling, fitness competitions, body transformations, or simply looking good in your jeans or swimsuit.

Performance sports carry a higher risk of injury. Statistically, individuals who sustain injuries in the first 6-12 months of a new exercise program are less likely to return to fitness ever again. The first year is crucial for establishing the right nutrition and exercise program, according to experts. Moreover, there’s a significant drop-off in clean eating once someone stops exercising. One of the most disheartening experiences is to invest considerable time and effort into changing your lifestyle, only to be derailed by an injury in the first 6-12 months!

Steroids and stimulants are some of the fastest-growing trends in the fitness industry among competitors, influencers, and trainers. They do the work for you, and you do not need to know as much about how to get the body changing with food and exercise. My program is all-natural body sculpting. Steroids and stimulants are a distraction from the natural science of food and exercise.

I was a competitive athlete in the Half-marathon distance for over 10 years and ran a 7:30-minute mile for over 13.1 miles. I also had a column in the Loma Linda Lopergram and served as the assistant editor for over 6 years. My column, “Karla’s Corner,” was dedicated to helping endurance athletes use long-distance races to lose weight “safely” and prevent injuries. I’ve helped many runners develop a healthy plan for running or realize a performance program does not match their goal.

My last race, the Sendai Half Marathon in Sendai, Japan, I stood at the start line next to Mizuki Noguchi, who won the Gold medal in the 2004 Olympic Games. This race typically has around 100 women and 800 men participating, with about 30,000 spectators. Only qualified runners may participate. After 10 years of running, I retired my running shoes, picked up my heels, and turned my attention to the stage, never looking back. It’s much easier to manage, I love the lifestyle and the way I look! I can be stage ready in 3-4 weeks, most of the year, from my lifestyle. I love the food and the training. It’s much easier and takes less time for me to look and feel amazing and run my company. I competed (naturally) in almost every organization and across many different categories.
